Nat King Cole is one of the most popular vocalists and most extraordinary Jazz piano
players of all time. He sold over 50 million records during his ground-breaking career
and he was also the first black performer who, during the Forties and Fifties, hosted his
own radio and TV shows. The DVD in hand presents the live recording of a concert
held at the Savoy Theatre London in 1985 in which various artists pay homage to the
great artist Nat King Cole by presenting their interpretations of his most popular songs.
Besides the performances of singers such as Danny Williams, musical star Lon Satton
or tap dance genius Will Gaines, the appearance of the world-famous Nina Simone is
one of the highlights of this evening at the Savoy.
Jazz pianist, pop singer, and style icon, the impossibly smooth Nat "King" Cole has
proven so unforgettable (to reference his famed song of the same name) that an
organization has been formed that is dedicated to preserving his memory and music.
A NIGHTINGALE SANG is an emotional all-star tribute to the King, featuring marquee
stars Danny Williams, Sol Raye, Will Gaines, and the inimitable, husky-voiced
Nina Simone. Performed at London's Savoy Theatre in 1985, this heart-wrenching
concert ends with Nina Simone's mesmerizing interpretation of "Mississippi Goddam."
